"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." - 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
The apostle Paul used his letters to Timothy to provide encouragement for the young pastor to stand firm in his faith, particularly in times of persecution. This same encouragement applies to believers today.
Throughout church history, there have been various forms of persecution to the Christian faith. This began with the arrest, flogging, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ Himself. The persecution then continued with the murder of eleven of the twelve apostles. This persecution continued throughout the past 2,000 years of church history. Christians have been tortured and killed, merely for their faith in Jesus Christ.
Today, Christians around the world are persecuted through imprisonment, physical and emotional abuse, and even death--just for the faith they hold. In a much more mild form, Christians in the Western cultures are also persecuted. Often, this takes the form of "political correctness" or in the name of tolerance.
Unfortunately, these various forms of persecution sometimes causes many believers to fear sharing their faith, often to the point of not giving any indications of their personal beliefs at all.
However, like Paul exhorted Timothy, God has not given us a spirit of fear. Rather, He has given us a spirit of power and love and of a sound mind.
Power - to boldly proclaim our faith, in spite of opposition
