Here Am I, Send Me

Posted by Marshall Girtman on

Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” – Isaiah 6:8 NASB

Isaiah had a vision of being carried into the throne room of heaven. There he saw the Lord sitting on a throne. Angels stood above Him and worshiped Him continually. Upon seeing this, Isaiah feared he would die immediately for seeing God Himself.

Isaiah, however, did not die then. Rather, one of the angels brought a burning coal from the altar of the Lord and touched Isaiah’s mouth with it. This was symbolic of providing atonement for Isaiah’s sin.

Upon having his sin atoned for, Isaiah clearly heard the voice of the Lord. And, immediately Isaiah answered the call of the Lord to become sent by the Lord to become a spokesman for Him.

While we may not have seen the throne room of heaven, we can follow the same pattern Isaiah did.

First, upon recognizing the holiness of God, we should recognize our own unrighteousness.

Second, we should accept the free gift of salvation God offers to us. Rather than being offered atonement (a temporary covering for our sins), God now offers us redemption (complete payment for our sin debt) through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Next, once we have received salvation, we can hear the voice of the Lord clearly.

Finally, by surrendering to the Lordship of Christ, we can respond to the voice of the Lord in obedience to His will for our lives.

I am not sure where you find yourself in these steps.

Perhaps you are realizing your own unrighteousness in light of the holiness of God. If so, that’s a good thing. It’s the first step on the way to salvation. We can’t accept the gift of a Savior without acknowledging our need for a Savior.

Maybe you have received the gift of salvation and wonder, “Now what?” I urge you to seek to grow closer to God and listen for His voice as He speaks. “But how?” you may be asking. It has been said God speaks through the Bible, prayer, circumstances, and His people. I urge you to listen to His voice.

Perhaps you hear His voice directing you. That is a wonderful thing! If so, I urge you to be obedient to the call of our Lord and follow His will for your life.

  • I am speaking for myself when I say this. I used to get frustrated because I never heard what God wanted me to do and it wasn’t until I started reading and studying His word, putting Him first and doing His will that I understood and knew without a doubt that it was coming from Him. Well written article!
